MEET THE MONTSANT TURTLE

PRIORAT / PN de la Serra del Montsant
THE EXPERIENCE Protecting an endagered species.

Did you know that for thousands of years there has been a turtle that lives in the environments of the Montsant mountains?

This is the Mediterranean tortoise, a type of reptile descended directly from the dinosaurs. Unfortunately, this species is in danger of extinction, although the danger has decreased over more recent years.

Work has been done by the Natural Park of the Serra de Montsant for the reintroduction of this species. In the park two turtle colonies have been created, one in the western Montsant area and the other on the south slope, placing 2,650 specimens on the land.

The Mediterranean tortoise is a tranquile, silent, harmless and very independent animal. They are small and like to live in solitude. They only look for each other to mate. They normally live between 40 and 50 years, although they can also live up to 100 years!

WHAT CAN I DO If you are interested in nature, its conservation, as well as knowing the efforts that are made to keep the Mediterranean turtle in its habitat, visit the Natural Park of the Serra de Montsant.

1. Naturalist scape to the Montsant: Meet, come and touch the Mediterranean turtle, and explore its habitat with the company of an expert. To start the day and after a brief introduction about the Mediterranean turtle and the reintroduction project in the Montsant, we will go to the countryside to learn how to differentiate them, get to know their habitat, etc. After lunch we propose a visit to the Cartuja de Escaladei, to get to know the relationship that already existed between the monks and the turtles. Finish your experience with a tasting of local paté and sausages.

2. Visit the Interpretation and Reproduction Tortoise Center: The Mediterranean tortoise has been a protected species since 1973, at which time its possession in captivity was banned. The objective of this centre is the conservation of the Mediterranean turtle, encouraging their breeding and reintroduction into their habitat when they are between 3 and 5 years old. During the visit you will have the opportunity to see about fifty Mediterranean turtles.
