Catalan poetry and emblematic mountains.
The hiking route of the Torb Shelters is an experience that combines sport, nature, history and culture, since in many cases, locations of the itinerary have been scene of the history of Catalonia. The route connects places as emblematic as Núria, Ulldeter, the Canigó massif, Mentet or Carança, corners of great trekking value, all together, day after day, in a single map and in one adventure.
Framed in the Natural Park of Capçaleres del Ter i del Freser, this route not only highlights its landscape and biographical value, but also the historical and cultural value that has been achieved by linking these areas to books that use them as scenery, poets who have been inspired by them, or chapters of history that have occurred here and are worth remembering.
In this sense, El Canigó has inspired numerous legends, popular songs and literary recreati ons, among which the epic poem Canigó, writt en by Jacinto Verdaguer. Around this mountain there is a whole symbolic universe linked to the identi ty of the Catalan people, a fact that concentrates with the festi ve traditi on of the “Flame of the Canigó”.
In addition, on the summit of the Puigmal, another of the emblematic peaks of the route, you can find an iron cross and a plaque with verses by Jacint Verdaguer.
